Claes Lundström, Research Director Medical IT at Sectra, has finalized a study on the challenges facing radiologists. Many necessary and desired improvements in healthcare are dependent on progress in medical imaging and radiologists’ image reivew is a key component of the diagnostic chain. This type of advanced reasoning through visual interaction is known as Visual …

Work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WRMD) are a major cause of occupational ill-health, encompassing a wide range of inflammatory and degenerative diseases and disorders that result in pain and functional impairment of the hand/wrist, arm, shoulder, neck and back. Several studies has shown that these conditions are severe and common among radiographers performing repetitive mammography examinations.
This white paper looks at how Sectra …

Today’s healthcare strives to practice as much evidence-based medicine as possible. New methods should be well researched, creating a need for close collaboration between hospitals, academia and private enterprise. New technology should be proven to be both effective and cost-efficient – and, of course, easy to implement into daily practice. New treatment options are developed, …

In a population of 100,000 women screened annually from age 40 to 55 and biannually thereafter to age 74 years, mammography screening would save 497 lives. However, with a dose of 3.7 mGy per breast and examination, 11 women would die from radiation-induced breast cancer as an effect of the screening. Looking at years of life, 10,670 years would be saved and 136 years lost among these women, giving a benefit-to-risk ratio of 78.5. The linear relationship between radiation dose and risk of radiation-induced cancer indicates that the benefit-to-risk ratio would be improved if the dose could be decreased while maintaining image quality and accuracy of diagnosis.

Spectral Imaging (color mammography) is one of the most exciting and promising innovations in mammography. This new procedure offers great possibilities in visualization of suspicious findings, and in conjunction with iodine contrast media, it substantially enhances tumor contrast. Thus Spectral Imaging might be able to handle cases which previously were the sole domain of breast MRI.
A clinical evaluation is currently …

This Norwegian study aimed at comparing mean glandular dose (MGD) in all full-field digital mammography and screen film mammography systems used in the Norwegian national mammography screening program. MGD from 31 screening units, based on an average of 50 women at each screening unit, representing 12 X-ray models from five different …

Will the role of radiology in the healthcare of tomorrow be central or peripheral? The continued evolution of IT solutions is likely to be the catalyst propelling radiology either into the limelight or the shadows. The shadows analogous to a laborious but unchallenging delivery of lab results, whereas the limelight corresponds to an integrated, highly …
